Max’s Magic Moments: 3rd World Championship

Max Verstappen is now a triple world champion and has earned his third title in an even more dominant fashion than the first two with few drivers challenging him for race victories putting him in company of the greats: Senna, Piquet and Lauda to name a few.

Verstappen has had a stellar season so far and here are what I think were his best moments in his dominant journey to a third world championship.

1. A Perfect 10

Max smashed many records during his 2023 campaign with one of the most impressive being a record 10 consecutive race wins in a single season – a true measure of his dominance and consistency.

At the Italian Grand Prix, Verstappen took one of his more hard-fought victories after having to overtake Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz for the lead in order to wrap up 10 wins.

2. A bit of pit stop practice?

Another moment when it was clear Max was in a league of his own was at the Austrian Grand Prix (Red Bull’s home race).

While everyone else was breaching track limits, Verstappen had built up such a gap over the drivers behind he pitted on the penultimate lap in order to take the fastest lap point with fresh tyres – 33 points in a race weekend clearly wasn’t enough for the Dutchman.

3. Francorchamps Fight-Back

A race which wasn’t always certain to go Verstappen’s way was the Belgian Grand Prix as an engine penalty demoted Max to P6 on the grid.

Within half the race distance, Verstappen was back in the lead and by the end of the Grand Prix the Dutchman had pulled a 22 second lead over his teammate in the same car – something that promoted Max to want to repeat his Austria pit stop gamble.

4. A Dutch Deluge

Max’s home race was nothing but plain sailing as changeable weather conditions and a deluge of rain at the end made the race a strategic nightmare.

Verstappen lost the lead early on but pitting for dry tyres before his teammate allowed Max to take his rightful place at the front of the grid as he led for most of the race thereafter to secure another win in front of his home crowd.

5. World Champion on a Saturday?

Yesterday (Saturday October 7) Max Verstappen took his third world championship on a Saturday – a feat not achieved since Nelson Piquet won a championship many years ago.

Despite not winning the Sprint, Verstappen secured the championship by coming in second and knew he’d won before the chequered flag as his nearest ‘rival’ (teammate Sergio Perez) failed to finish.

Max Verstappen has had an incredible year so far and will probably go on to win even more races this season with his dominant displays in the RB19 being etched into F1 history among the greats.

  1. Gabriella, you have nicely pulled together some of the highlights that have contributed to Max’s Threepeat. I tend to compare Max to recent F1 Champions like Lewis and Michael, but you have done real research and go back much farther. Verstappen is not my favourite driver in the way Lewis, Alonso, Felipe Massa, Rubens Barrichello and Jacques Villeneuve have been, but I believe that Max can become the Greatest Of All Time. Great article.
