The Canadian Grand Prix was a relatively processional race with DRS trains covering over half the grid at some point yet it produced some interesting narratives.
Red Bull: Red Bull take their 100th Grand Prix victory and Verstappen takes his 41st (equally Senna’s tally). It was yet another dominant display from Verstappen as he led the race with what seemed to be relative ease despite being ‘woken up’ by hitting a kerb. Perez made a decent recovery drive after a disappointing qualifying to take P6 with fastest lap.
Aston Martin: Another great day for Alonso after he took another podium; this time taking second place after warding off the threat posed by Mercedes. Home hero Stroll made less of an impact but still took home points in P9 benefitting from Norris’ penalty.
Mercedes: A tale of two halves for Mercedes as Hamilton drove a strong race to take his second consecutive podium while contact with the barriers for Russell left him languishing near the back and ultimately retiring from the race.
Ferrari: For once Ferrari actually pulled off a decent strategy call and managed to turn slightly disappointing grid positions into a strong points haul (P4 and P5) that moved Sainz up in the standings.
Williams: A great, glorious day for the people in Grove as Albon took Williams’ best result for two seasons with P7 and six lovely points. Sadly, Sargeant failed to make similar effect as he suffered engine failure.
Alpine: A decent result for Ocon as he took P8 however Gasly was out of the points after a disappointing qualifying but still recovered to P12.
Alfa Romeo: A strong weekend for Bottas after he topped FP1 (in extenuating circumstances) and then took the final points-paying position in P10. Zhou failed to make an impact after he started last and came P16.
McLaren: From a double Q3 appearance to no points on the board it was a less than successful weekend for McLaren. Norris was given a five second penalty for ‘unsportsmanlike behaviour’ (argue amongst yourselves) and came P13 but Piastri did better in P11.
AlphaTauri: An unremarkable performance compounds an unremarkable season for AlphaTauri as neither driver took points and De Vries came last of the finishers.
Haas: Despite a spectacular qualifying from Hulkenberg, Haas failed to capitalise on this and ended up languishing in the lower reaches of the field with Hulkenberg in P15 and Magnussen in P17.
