F1 Monaco GP Debrief

Racing in the rain…

A mixed Monaco Grand Prix with a monotonous opening and a manic ending that ended with a mostly predictable result among a few surprises.

Red Bull: Unsurprisingly, Max Verstappen won by a considerable margin in Monaco leading his 1000th lap, the combination of the Dutchman and his RB19 is truly unstoppable at this point. The same glory was not experienced by Perez who felt the consequences of a crash in qualifying and finished P16.

Aston Martin: A tale of two halves for Aston Martin with Alonso scoring his best result of the season with a P2 finish while Stroll was the only DNF of the race after struggling in the treacherous conditions.

Alpine: “Estie Bestie is on the podium!” A shock result capitalising on a great qualifying lead to Ocon’s third career podium. Gasly also put in a good performance to take P7.

Mercedes: What could have been for George Russell who threw away his best chance of a podium so far after going off the track leaving him P5 behind his teammate in P4 who came off the worse in the strategy game.

Ferrari: Yet another strategic misdemeanour led to problems for Ferrari as both Sainz and Leclerc lost positions due to their team’s inability to deal with changing weather conditions. They came P8 and P6 respectively.

McLaren: Double points for the Woking outfit after they took advantage of the failings of those around them to leave Norris in P9 and Piastri in P10.

Alfa Romeo: Tyre degradation towards the end cost Bottas a chance and points but a good drive put him P11. Zhou succumbed to a similar fate in P13.

AlphaTauri: Finally De Vries has found the form he promised with his best result of the season in P12. Tsunoda was beset by brake troubles and fell out of the points to come P15.

Haas: A dismal day for Haas as they got caught up in all the contact with Hulkenberg ending up P17 and Magnussen (who was rarely seen out of the barriers) was last of the finishers in P19.

Williams: A nonchalant race for Williams as Sargeant tried every tyre compound going for no apparent reason and Albon languished near the back but finished P14 ahead of his teammate in P18.

Gabriella, it’s great to read another of your excellent race analysis. And thanks for dropping it on Race Director. Your comment are spot on. I posted a companion piece comparing the F1 Grand Prix of Monaco and the Indy 500, which both occur on the same weekend each year. I’d appreciate your comments.
