Formula One have decided to change the F1 Sprint format for 2023 making the shorter 100km race a separate part of the weekend.
Starting at this weekend’s Azerbaijan Grand Prix weekend, qualifying for the Grand Prix will be moved to the Friday afternoon (but retain its usual format with an FP1 session beforehand) with the Saturday designated for sprint-related running.
The morning session will be a ‘Sprint Shootout’ which takes the format of a normal qualifying session (Q1, Q2, Q3) but condensed into 20 minutes with five cars eliminated after 12, 10 and 8 minutes respectively.
The afternoon session will then play host to the typical Sprint race which will retain the ability for the top eight finishers to score points however will not have any bearing on the grid for the Grand Prix itself (with the grid set in Friday qualifying).
These changes will see an increase in the amount of racing action per race weekend however the teams will only have one hour of practice leading to potentially more jeopardy as they enter competitive sessions with less awareness of the optimum set-up.
