As you may be aware, I have started a campaign to improve financial education in UK schools after noticing how poorly it is delivered and the adverse impact it is having on young people.
I know of people in their final year of secondary school who do not know that you pay interest on money borrowed nor the differences between credit and debit cards – a recipe for fiscal mayhem later in life.
After seeing how little people actually know, I decided to conduct a questionnaire of young people across the country to see if the national opinion tallied with the experiences myself and others have had – sadly it did. 64% of those I asked said that the financial education they had received would not set them up well for life and only 3% had received financial education lessons at school – a truly dismal state of affairs.
Noticing the real need for change in this area, I decided to press on with my campaign and produce a report to send to relevant figures in government and the financial world (which I have now done). So far, nobody has replied to me but I’ll update this if/when I hear back.
If you want to read my report, you can view and download it here and feel free to share it with anyone you know (especially anyone to do with finance or education!).
