My report into Financial Education.

As you may be aware, I have started a campaign to improve financial education in UK schools after noticing how poorly it is delivered and the adverse impact it is having on young people.

I know of people in their final year of secondary school who do not know that you pay interest on money borrowed nor the differences between credit and debit cards – a recipe for fiscal mayhem later in life.

After seeing how little people actually know, I decided to conduct a questionnaire of young people across the country to see if the national opinion tallied with the experiences myself and others have had – sadly it did. 64% of those I asked said that the financial education they had received would not set them up well for life and only 3% had received financial education lessons at school – a truly dismal state of affairs.

Noticing the real need for change in this area, I decided to press on with my campaign and produce a report to send to relevant figures in government and the financial world (which I have now done). So far, nobody has replied to me but I’ll update this if/when I hear back.

If you want to read my report, you can view and download it here and feel free to share it with anyone you know (especially anyone to do with finance or education!).

Bravo Gabriella. I printed your report and will read it in detail. At first glance it looks like a masterpiece. Such a huge effort on your part deserves some replies. I’m sure they will start to roll in. You probably don’t realize how much your writing has improved since those early days on RD. Keep up the good work.

Gabriella, I’ve now read your eight page report in its entirety. It’s excellent and very comprehensive. To be helpful and to encourage some replies to the report, I’d like to offer a few simple suggestions.

      • In the pie charts, some of the “slices” are the same colour. Also, the colour references shown on the side are a bit tiny, so you can’t distinguish between the colours

      • The report ends with Conclusion, but it might be helpful to add a short section on Recommendations, with your recommendations listed in “bullet” fashion.

      • I don’t see a clear way to reply or comment on your report, other than responding to the email it’s attached to. At the very end of your report it might be worth adding something like “ Your comments and suggestions are welcome. Please reply to (your email address for example)”. You will need to send this report to many people who are not necessarily readers of your website.

      I hope this is helpful.

      1. Thanks for reading it (and your very detailed feedback), I’ll try and address your suggestion:

        – Pie charts: they are different colours and there wasn’t really a way to make it look nice without choosing one colour way. I also can’t really make the text bigger without ruining the template (which was a right pain).

        – Probably should do that but I haven’t really got any clear recommendations. If I think of any I’ll add them on

        – Most people will read it on the website and if they’re desperate to contact me they can do it that way. I don’t really want to put my email address online and I’ve emailed it to lots of people (who can just reply that way).

        Thanks again for your feedback!

You are welcome on the feedback. Just a few follow up comments:

Maybe it’s my printer, but the pie slices only print in 3 colours, not 4. They are pale gray, light blue and two in dark blue. There is no difference between 3 and 4. Possibly you could crosshatch #4 to make it darker.

The benefit of a few recommendations is that it gives the reader a way to focus their replies.

I can see you don’t want your email everywhere, but in this day and age, people won’t respond to anything (even a simple survey) unless it’s easy to do.

Good luck with this ambitious endeavor!
