Why I’m trying to do something about financial education.

Money is an intrinsic part of modern life as we live in one of the most competitive consumer economies yet most young people have very little understanding of the financial world that surrounds us and are disadvantaged as a result.

Since I was seven years old, I have been utterly fascinated by personal finance and business learning an awful lot along the way. In more recent years, I have seen my friends and peers struggle and show no awareness of financial issues which has made me concerned for others.

Despite financial education being on the National Curriculum in the UK, most schools (being academies) don’t teach it very well or not at all. This is a massive problem for young people as many don’t know the basics which will have dire consequences when they enter the real world.

For some (probably foolish) reason, I’ve decided that I’m going to use the knowledge and experience I have to try and do something about financial education in the UK in an attempt to improve the fiscal literacy of the nation.

So far, I’ve done a questionnaire where I’ve asked a group of secondary school students their opinions on financial education and the results are seriously concerning.

64% said they do not think the financial education they are receiving will set them up well for life while 38% say that it is rarely mentioned at their school.

Although some progress has been made through Martin Lewis distributing textbooks to every state school in the UK, there is still a long way to go as people really don’t seem to be learning anything and there has been no real progress.

For me, proper financial education is the key to the next generation having a prosperous future however many others do not see that way and I’ve now decided to try and do something about it.

Gabriella, I admire you for the challenge you have undertaken here. It’s really a dual challenge…getting young people interested in personal finance, and then getting the curriculum with all the resources (text books, qualified teachers, etc) into the school system.

Your determination and grit will carry you a long way, and if you can rally teachers, administrators and other students to your cause, you will gain momentum. You will undoubtedly need some funding to keep your mission in the public’s eyes, but some of this could be obtained through the British versions of GoFundMe. Also, your teachers can help you apply for government grants.

    Please post on your progress.

    1. Thanks! No idea what has actually possessed me to do this but it’ll be a fun ride. Based on my research (not going to divulge the stats) people are eager to learn personal finance but it just isn’t taught very well. There are also people qualified to teach it, they just have more important things to do.

I’ve got quite a few people on my side and have made good progress with the early bits and then will get some feedback from people more qualified to have an opinion then go from there. I’m not planning to get any funding because I’m not intending on spending money – why would I?
