2023 Bahrain GP Debrief

A scintillating season opener had a great deal of excitement, some interesting talking points and has made us F1 fans even more excited for the remaining 22 races of the season.

Red Bull: Starting as they mean to go on with an utterly dominant display from Red Bull with a 1-2. Verstappen was almost 40 seconds clear of Alonso. If this is an indicator of what to come then Red Bull will be breezing their way to another championship.

Aston Martin: Not quite the win we were all hoping for but a podium for Alonso is something we can all celebrate. Additionally, Stroll put in a heroic performance to take P6 despite his broken bones and collision with his teammate. Nice to see another team up there.

Ferrari: A concerning return to their form of last year with Leclerc retiring from the race with an engine issue – where have we seen that before? Sainz just missed out on a podium after succumbing to tyre degradation and ended up P4.

Mercedes: A disappointing performance for Mercedes as they did not match up to their expectations. Hamilton fought well with Alonso but ended up P5 whereas Russell suffered from a slow stop and ended up P7.

Alfa Romeo: A shock result for Bottas as he took an excellent P8. Zhou ended up in the place where you’d expect the car to be in P16.

Alpine: A tale of two halves for Alpine as Ocon had an unbearable race with 20 seconds worth of penalties for various things. Gasly put in a great effort from last to P9.

Williams: A source of F1 joy was the fact that Williams have got a point on the board at the first race as Alex Albon took P10! Sargeant also drove a great debut ending up P12.

AlphaTauri: So close but yet so far for Tsunoda as his fight to get into the points ended up with him missing out in P11. De Vries put in a decent effort and was P14.

Haas: Damage from the start led Hulkenberg unable to capitalise on his great qualifying and ended up P15. Magnussen drove decently to take P13.

McLaren: A woeful day for the team from Woking as Piastri had to retire due to electrical issues and Norris had to endure six pit stops due to a myriad of mechanical issues.

This was a really exciting start to the season. The only downside I see is that Verstappen and Red Bull will be totally domineering. There were no real crashes or accidents, so the excitement came from true wheel to wheel racing. When Alonzo finally overtook Lewis, I was cheering madly for Alonzo but suddenly said to myself: “What’s going on here? I’m a Hamilton fan”. Now I’m an Alonzo AND Hamilton fan. And Stroll’s good showing added to the excitement.

After all the silly season hype, I did have some expectation that McLaren would do reasonably well, but it was not to be. Bottas spiced up the day for Alfa Romeo so there is some hope for their season. Great debrief!
