Williams announce Mercedes’ Chief Strategist James Vowles as Team Principal.

After what feels like an agonisingly long wait, we finally know who will be at the helm of the Grove-based outfit for the 2023 season – James Vowles.

Vowles is (well was) Mercedes’ Chief Strategist and had a role in F1 folklore for the phrase ‘Valtteri, it’s James’ when he delivered the oft-unpopular team orders to the Silver Arrows’ second driver.

Jost Capito’s replacement had spent his entire F1 career at Mercedes in its various incarnations (Honda, Brawn) so it will be an interesting move for him into a new team and new role.

A further question this poses is who Mercedes hire as their new Chief Strategist or whether to promote from within – all I’m hoping is that they have no links to Ferrari!
