In Formula One, team principals seem to have a rather stable position and don’t move about excessively, many have held their positions for a long time or had similar roles in the sport for years.
However, this year, it appears that trend has been completely abandoned as four teams are embroiled in team principal silly season chaos.
The catalyst for all this was Mattia Binotto’s resignation from Ferrari as that left a lucrative spot at a top team. We then heard the less thrilling (but more disappointing) news that Jost Capito was leaving Williams.
By winter off-season standards, that was rather big news however it pales into insignificance following today’s announcements.
Frédéric Vasseur left his position as CEO and team principal at Sauber to take the Ferrari job, Andreas Seidl left McLaren to replace Vasseur as head of Sauber and Andreas Stella was announced as the new team boss at McLaren.
Vasseur’s move to Ferrari is definitely a positive step for the team, they’d struggle to do worse than the mismanagement and blunders under Binotto while Vasseur’s past links to Leclerc in junior formulas and his F1 entry may hint at fairer treatment for the Monegasque driver.
Seidl has links to the VAG group (who will be taking over Sauber with Audi) due to his tenure at Porsche motorsport while also previously working at Sauber themselves suggesting he’s well experienced and will do well.
Stella has been promoted from inside McLaren so will have a great understanding of how the team operates and should be able to use that to his advantage.
As for where this leaves Williams, currently they are without two key members of staff (their technical director has also departed the team) and need to find suitable candidates in order to execute their plan of moving up the grid.
