Abu Dhabi GP Debrief

The curtain fell on an exciting 2022 season however the final race wasn’t exactly the thriller it was last year.

Red Bull – An utterly dominant race from Verstappen reflected the impeccable performances he has had all year as he clinched his 15th win. Perez lost out on second in the constructors after a two-stop gamble failed to pay off and he came home in P3.

Ferrari – A positive for Ferrari to take away after their tumultuous year was that Leclerc finishes second in the champions after taking P2. Sainz drove well to take P4 despite lap one contact with Hamilton.

Mercedes – Mercedes’ first mechanical DNF of the season came with three laps to go as Hamilton’s car suffered a failure. Russell drove a strong race to take P5 and fourth in the championship to become the third teammate of Hamilton to beat him in the standings.

McLaren – A splendid drive from Norris put the Brit P6 with Ricciardo P9 but a double points finish wasn’t enough to take fourth in the championship off Alpine.

Alpine – Glory in the Alpine camp as despite a DNF for Alonso they held onto fourth in the championship. Ocon took P7 just behind Norris.

Aston Martin – A great drive in Vettel’s final race but mismanagement of the tyre strategy meant he failed to capitalise on this and only took P10 (but still a point). Stroll fared slightly better and took P8.

AlphaTauri – A reasonable but not astounding end for AlphaTauri with Tsunoda close to the points in P11 while Gasly was slightly further back in P14.

Alfa Romeo – A mediocre end to a decent season for Alfa Romeo with Zhou in P12 and Bottas in P15 however they did manage to beat Aston Martin in the constructors which counts for something.

Haas – Languishing at the back were Haas with Schumacher in P16 after contact with Latifi and Magnussen in P17. The only way is up for next year as Hulkenberg joins their ranks.

Williams – A sad end to Latifi’s Williams tenure as he failed to finish the race, he almost ended up in the barriers again after tangling with Schumacher. Albon fared better in P13.
