Abu Dhabi GP Qualifying Analysis

The final qualifying session had drama, delight and disappointment for the 20 teams up and down the grid.

Red Bull – Ending the season with a dominant display in qualifying with a 1-2. Verstappen lead the pair and even had time to give Perez a tow to sure up their position. It couldn’t have gone much better.

Ferrari – First blow to Checo in the fight for P2 in the drivers with Leclerc starting behind the Mexican in P3 despite a strong qualifying. Sainz is also in the mix in P4.

Mercedes – Not where the mighty Mercedes expected to find themselves with Hamilton in P5 and Russell in P6, can they still get on the podium?

McLaren – A strong performance for McLaren with both cars through to Q3. Norris was ahead and close to the Mercedes in P7 while Ricciardo rounded off the top ten in P10.

Alpine – Close, but not close enough as they lose out in the first battle of the weekend to McLaren. Ocon starts alongside Norris in P8 while Alonso failed to reach Q3 in P11.

Aston Martin – A splendid final qualifying for Vettel as he drove the wheels off his Aston Martin (not literally) to put it P9 after a string of Q1 knockouts. Stroll was not so strong and only came in P14.

AlphaTauri – A good drive from Tsunoda saw him into P12 whereas Gasly didn’t fare as well in P17.

Haas – For once, Schumacher outqualified Magnussen and made it through to Q2 putting his Haas P13. Magnussen was P16.

Alfa Romeo – Not the ideal end for Alfa Romeo with Bottas out in Q1 in P18 and Zhou the last of the Q2 runners in P15.

Williams – A dire performance for Williams as they languish at the back of the grid. Latifi disappointed in his final qualifying with P20 and Albon didn’t fare much better in P19.
