São Paulo GP Qualifying Analysis

In Formula One, changeable conditions mean anything can happen and in qualifying for the São Paulo Grand Prix, a little bit of weather and a red flag changed everything.

Haas – A shock result made Haas the first American constructor to take pole since 1975, a great lap from Magnussen and some well-timed rain lead the Dane taking his first career pole. Fittingly for this topsy-turvy session, his teammate Schumacher starts the sprint in P20.

Red Bull – No surprises here, Verstappen takes the second spot on the front row in P2 while his teammate was held up by a Ferrari and could only manage P9.

Mercedes – Mercedes, the cause of all the mayhem. A fortuitous Q3 crash for Russell lead to a red flag period and some heavy rain which secured P3 for the 24-year-old and left his teammate in P8.

McLaren – From a bout of food poisoning to fourth on the sprint grid, it’s been an unusual weekend for McLaren’s Lando Norris yet he put in an excellent lap. Ricciardo once again struggled and failed to make Q3, starting the sprint in P14.

Ferrari – Despite it being a qualifying session, Ferrari gave us another strategy disasterclass with Leclerc being the sole driver on the intermediate tyre setting a slow time as a result and then an agonisingly slow pit stop meant he couldn’t improve on P10. Sainz starts P5.

Alpine – A strong performance for Alpine with both cars into Q3. Ocon was ahead of his teammate in P6 while his teammate slots in behind in P7.

Williams – A decent day for Williams as Albon makes it into Q2 and starts P11 while Latifi took P16 on the sprint grid.

AlphaTauri – Nothing to write home about for AlphaTauri with the only event of note being when Gasly became the first driver to switch to slicks. He starts P12 whereas Tsunoda is in P19.

Aston Martin – Both drivers through to Q2 which is a slight improvement on previous dire performances. Vettel starts the sprint P13 with Stroll slightly behind in P15.

Alfa Romeo – Despite showing strong performance in practice, damp conditions were Alfa Romeo’s undoing with both drivers out in Q1. Zhou was P17 and Bottas was P18.
