Top Five 2022 Christmas Adverts

It’s the most wonderful time of the year, the time when companies release the Christmas campaigns they’ve spent months planning and millions producing to the world and hope it doesn’t go down like a lead balloon.

Most of those I’ve seen this year have been amazing and it has been very hard to whittle it down to a top five adverts rather than write about every single one. However, after much deliberation here is my top five Christmas adverts this year…

5. Tesco: The Christmas Party

After months of political turmoil in the UK, a festive play on it from a supermarket is everything I didn’t know I needed.

In this advert, Tesco declare their ‘intentions’ for Christmas with a few jokes on normal political policies and how they link to their business.

It’s not my favourite but I do enjoy it and appreciate the efforts they’ve gone to while also thinking it is better than Tesco’s campaign of recent years.

4. John Lewis: The Beginner

A heartwarming take on the Christmas advert from John Lewis this year with a tale linking to their charitable efforts regarding those in the care system and how it impacts people.

As you may be aware, the John Lewis Christmas advert is a major occasion and once again did not disappoint. I feel a little bit bad not putting it higher in the list but there are so many good contenders this year I can’t justify it.

3. Lidl: Lidl Bear

A close call between this advert and the Aldi one after but Lidl isn’t quite there in my eyes. The story of Lidl Bear is very cool and is definitely something I can see the British public getting behind.

The advert and narrative is well thought through however I think Lidl are missing a trick in not selling Lidl Bear in shops so people can buy their own. If Aldi can do it with Kevin the Carrot then why can’t Lidl?

2. Aldi: Kevin the Carrot

It seems Aldi can’t go wrong with Kevin the Carrot with all the adverts relating to the veg-based character in recent years being absolutely brilliant.

This year’s campaign has a similar narrative to the film ‘Home Alone’ with the advert showing how Kevin narrowly avoided being away for Christmas.

Bonus point to Aldi for their cheeky reference to the Colin vs Cuthbert court case drama in the football match scene with 1-0 to Cuthbert. I can’t convey how happy I am about this, the story of the Cuthbert drama must live on!

1. Celebrations: #BringBackBounty

This is one I honestly did not see coming, if you’d said to me that Celebrations of all companies would be my favourite I would’ve said don’t be so daft yet here we are.

This advert capitalises on the recent social media attention about Bounty being scrapped from select boxes of Celebrations and the public outcry about this seemingly unpopular chocolate.

It’s lighthearted, funny and doesn’t seem like something you’d get out of a multinational corporation so for that I must applaud and congratulate Celebrations and Mars on their brilliant campaign.
