Farewell Fiesta, what does this mean for the car industry?

A Fiesta being heroic.

Ford have announced that from 2023, they will cease production of the Ford Fiesta: one of the best selling cars of all time with 4.8 million units sold in the UK alone.

Despite being a bastion of the small car world, Ford have decided that the Fiesta is no longer the type of car they want to sell and that they are shifting their focus to all-electric models, eliminating ICE cars from the range by 2030.

Some may be questioning why such a successful car is being killed off and why it can’t just be given some batteries. The problem with this is that EVs built from piston cars are never as good, a compromise has been made somewhere which means a worse car that can be beaten by competitors.

If they electrified the current Fiesta, no matter how hard Ford tried, it would not be as good as a ground-up electric car from another manufacturer and would not be worth the additional cost.

Also, more people are buying crossovers these days as opposed to hatchbacks as the general consensus seems to be that being higher up is better than a practical car – this was another nail in the Fiesta‘s coffin.

The Ford Fiesta was a car in many flavours that was loved by many people. For 30 years it was a stalwart in society that did its job day-in, day-out. The Fiesta will be sorely missed but I’m sure Ford will have a brilliant replacement lined up in the next few years.
