Range, at present it’s the be all and end all of electric cars, pretty much the sole deciding factor when buying an EV. If you make an EV with less than 200 miles of range, you’ve got little hope of selling loads. But why?
The average commute in the UK is 7.9 miles, any EV can do that, most PHEVs can do that on pure electric range. And if you commute further, it’s unlikely to exceed your car’s range one-way and in the not-too-distant future, there should be charge points at your workplace.
Now some may say “What about my annual holiday? I go every year from London to the Scottish Highlands”. But your car does not always have to fit your annual holiday requirements, as the Top Gear presenter Chris Harris said, “You don’t buy a minibus for the one time a year you take family to a wedding,” so why would you change your car purely for one holiday. Also you’ll most likely stop on the way for food or a comfort break, in this time you could charge an EV.
Nobody decides what ICE car they buy based on the size of its fuel tank, you just stop for fuel mare often. And as EVs charge times reduce with more power able to go in (looking at you Porsche Taycan and Hyundai Ioniq 5) maybe range won’t be the defining number forever.
Do you think range is everything with EVs?
