Italian GP Qualifying Analysis

Qualifying in Italy was rather anti-climatic due to the multitude of penalties. However, it still provided some entertainment…

Ferrari – A 17th pole position for Leclerc made all the sweeter by the fact it was at Ferrari’s home race. His 8th this year means he has had the most poles in a season for a Ferrari driver since Schumacher. Sainz was P3 but starts P18.

Red Bull – A strong performance for Red Bull but rather meaningless due to the penalties. They qualified P2 and P3 but start P7 and P13.

Mercedes – A best of the rest performance for Mercedes with qualifying ending P5 and P6. Russell gets promoted to P2 for his second front row of the season with Hamilton languishing in P19.

McLaren – McLaren’s Monza magic continues as the two papaya cars will line up P3 and P4 tomorrow after an impressive qualifying session where they both made it to Q3.

AlphaTauri – A great day for Gasly who made it into Q3 and qualified P9 but a penalty hampered Tsunoda who starts last.

Alpine – For once, Alpine find themselves considerably behind McLaren as Alonso and Ocon line up P10 and P11 despite a Q2 knockout for the Frenchman.

Alfa Romeo – A decent outing for Alfa Romeo with P11 for Bottas and P14 for Zhou in qualifying. Shame the penalties ruin it.

Williams – A dramatic debut for De Vries as he outqualifies long-standing Williams driver Latifi and makes it through to Q2. Makes his first F1 start in the top ten with Latifi also up there in P10 after penalties.

Haas – Disappointment for Haas as they qualify P19 and P20, not escaping Q1 for the third time this year but penalties move them up the order but not by a considerable amount.

Aston Martin – A lacklustre performance for the British outfit with Stroll in P18 and Vettel in P17. Penalties do move them up the grid though.
