Piastri to McLaren

One of the major stories of silly season has finally resolved itself after a brief legal battle.

On August 2 2022, Alpine said Piastri would drive for them and Piastri firmly denied this, saying on Twitter ‘ I understand that, without my agreement, Alpine F1 have put out a press release late this afternoon that I am driving for them next year. This is wrong and I have not signed a contract with Alpine for 2023. I will not be driving for Alpine next year.’

This sent shockwaves through the paddock as speculation began as to what would the fate of Piastri be.

Alpine boss Otmar Szafnauer said in Spa that he believed he has a strong claim on Piastri and a contact signed in November – the Contract Recognition Board begged to differ.

Today, McLaren announced that Piastri would complete their 2023 driver lineup and we learned that the Australian signed for them on the July 4 after the British Grand Prix, making Ricciardo’s commitment to McLaren seem awkward.

With Piastri’s fate confirmed, F1 silly season speculation turns to the second Alpine seat. The front runners seem to be Gasly and Ricciardo, both fascinating prospects as they both have history with the team.

The likelihood of Gasly seems higher as it appears Red Bull have released him.

Either way, the remainder of silly season will be interesting.
